Intumescent seals – self-expanding protection in the event of fire

Our profile gaskets are flexible smoke and fire protection seals based on expandable graphite. In the event of a fire, their expandable graphite component foams up and increases its volume. The resulting char-like foam structure is rigid and stable; it seals off openings and reliably prevents flames, smoke and hot gases from penetrating through windows, doors, laboratory cabinets, safes, fire dampers etc.

Intumescent seals by KuhnOdice – all-round safety for joints and gaps

Based on three different intumescence technologies (sodium silicate, ammonium phosphate and graphite), we offer a comprehensive range of smoke and fire protection seals. They feature excellent fire protection properties plus outstanding elastic sealing performance.

Fields of application for intumescent seals

Whether it’s building components, batteries, ships or rail vehicles – intumescent seals reliably protect joints in structural components against exposure to heat and fire and thus prevent fire spread. Our intumescent seals are effectively at work in

  • windows
  • façades
  • fire doors
  • roller shutters
  • safes
  • fire dampers
  • safety storage cabinets
  • room partitioning systems
  • hazardous materials cabinets

Properties of self-expanding intumescent seals

Our intumescent (thermally expanding) seals offer many benefits, including:

  • fast and hassle-free installation
  • permanent elasticity and high degree of permanent movement absorption
  • designed for joint dimensions from 4 to 40 mm
  • sound and heat insulation
  • overcoatable and overpaintable
  • self-adhesion

How intumescent seals work

Intumescent seals are self-expanding and thus crucial for safeguarding openings in doors, windows or façades from fire, smoke and hot gases. Their mode of action is attributable to the heat-insulating rigid foam structure that builds up in the event of a fire: At temperatures of 100°C and above, the seals (which are usually graphite-based), swell to many times their original thickness. Therefore, they can offer reliable protection against fire and its hazardous effects. The microporous layer expands steadily, thus preventing the passage of flames, smoke and hot gas to adjacent areas. Intumescent seals are used in fire-resistant systems such as fire doors and glazings, where they serve to seal joints and gaps as a protection against the propagation of fire and smoke.

Intumescent seals – as unique as our customers

We use modern processes in the manufacture of our intumescent seals. Extrusion, for example, is among the methods we employ to meet the specific needs and fire protection requirements of each customer.

Standard extrusion: In this type of manufacturing process, our intumescent granular material is heated in a dedicated device (extruder) and then moulded into the shape required by the customer.

Coextrusion (or co-extrusion): Coextrusion is a manufacturing process whereby the benefits of two different materials are combined to form one single product: By bringing together similar or dissimilar plastics melts (e.g. an intumescent granular material and a rubber-elastic smoke protection material) and then moulding the resulting co-extrudate into the desired shape, a single high-performance profile is created. Our customers greatly benefit from this material synergy because it allows them to streamline and “leanify” their product range for enhanced productivity.

Coextrusion technology can also be used to fulfil individual secondary requirements and preferences such as decor, appearance, etc.

Why choose intumescent seals by KuhnOdice?

Our intumescent seals are reliable yet flexible sealing profiles that provide excellent protection against fire, smoke and hot gases. As another benefit, they come in many different sizes, colours and designs. Thanks to our wide range of materials, many different geometries (including star-shaped seals, round cords, strips, U-profiles, trapezoidal seals and many further shapes) can be created. All of our solutions are implemented in accordance with standard DIN EN ISO 9001. This way, you can rest assured to always “play it safe” with our fire protection seals for building components.

Also, we can combine our sealing profiles with other materials from our range to form technical solutions that not only meet the relevant fire protection requirements, but also perfectly integrate with the design of the customer’s specific product. This approach enables us to provide each customer with the bespoke solutions they need.
