Fire-retardant casting compounds – fire-resistant, gas-tight, watertight

Fire-retardant casting compounds are crucial to ensuring the safety of transport vehicles, and they also play a major part in various areas of the battery industry. Once cured, the casting materials act as a protective barrier that prevents the spread of fire and gas. The materials are specifically designed to withstand extreme temperatures and the impact of flames.

Casting compounds are primarily used in safety-critical areas, in areas with an increased fire risk and in applications that are subject to stringent fire protection requirements. For example, they serve to protect electronic components or to create cable and pipe penetration seals.

Benefits of fire-retardant casting compounds

  • Outstanding temperature resistance: Our fire-retardant casting compounds are designed to withstand even extreme temperatures without physical or chemical deterioration.
  • Low smoke development: When a fire strikes, the compounds reduce the emission of smoke gases and toxic substances.
  • Long service life: The compounds offer lasting protection over their entire service life.
  • Eco-friendliness: Our fire protection coatings are free from halogens and other environmentally harmful substances.
  • Chemical resistance: The compounds withstand aggressive substances, moisture, salt water and corrosion.
  • Convenient application: The compounds can be poured into the smallest cracks and corners without using any special tools.

Properties of fire-retardant casting compounds

Depending on the base material used, our casting compounds can be divided into two categories, namely epoxy resin casting compounds and polyurethane casting compounds. All casting compounds feature specific properties that make them the solution of choice for safety-critical areas:

  • They contain special fire-retardant additives and fillers.
  • They are often mineral-based or formulated based on special polymers with flame retardants.
  • They are designed to expand (‘foam up’) in the event of fire so as to form an insulating layer.
  • They withstand higher temperatures without losing their structural stability.
  • They are poor heat conductors, thus shielding the protected components from heat for longer.

Fields of application for fire-retardant casting compounds

In practice, fire-retardant casting compounds serve, for example, to seal cable penetrations in ships with a view to minimising the risk of fire spread through cable ducts. In aircraft construction, they serve to encapsulate accumulators/batteries so as to counteract overheating. In the rail vehicle industry, they serve to protect electrical control components. In the field of battery production, casting compounds serve to prevent short circuits and as a safety precaution against the rapid spread of thermal events.

Fire-retardant casting compounds are specially developed to provide increased protection in the event of fire. They are used, for example,

  • to protect electronic or safety-critical components
  • to increase fire safety in hazardous environments
  • to prevent the ignition and spread of fires
  • to dissipate heat and prevent overheating
  • or to protect against mechanical, environmental and electrical influences

Why choose fire-retardant casting compounds by KuhnOdice?

Our fire-retardant casting compounds are highly resistant to ageing and exhibit excellent adhesion properties on many materials. They meet the most stringent fire protection requirements whilst also providing damping qualities, shock resistance as well as resistance to chemicals, weathering, moisture or even seawater. The majority of our casting compounds stand out for their short curing time, superior temperature stability and required pressure-tightness.
