Fire-rated adhesives – efficient bonding keeps fire at bay
Fire-rated or non-combustible adhesives are essential in the manufacture of fire doors and windows because they ensure continued structural integrity even under extreme conditions. Fire-resistant adhesives improve the overall fire safety of a building and thus constitute another vital part of passive fire protection.
Benefits of non-combustible adhesives
Fire-rated adhesives must meet stringent safety standards to properly perform their fire protection function. And there is even more to them:
- Safety: Less occurrence of smoke and flames means greater safety
- Durability: Long service life even despite intensive use and extreme conditions
- Versatility: Designed for use with a wide variety of materials and fit for varied applications
- Energy efficiency: Excellent insulation properties contribute to energy savings
Properties of fire-rated adhesives
Fire-rated adhesives are distinguished by their ability to withstand high temperatures without losing their adhesive strength. Usually developed from inorganic and fire-resistant polymers, they can resist both thermal loads and mechanical stresses. Their key features include:
- thermal stability
- high mechanical strength
- chemical resistance
- resistance to ageing
- low smoke development in case of fire
Application materials for heat-resistant adhesives
Non-combustible adhesives are used for bonding the following materials and more:
- polyurethane
- rock fibre
- glass wool
- rock wool
- ceramic fibres
- plasterboard
- calcium silicate boards
The non-combustible adhesives PYROCOL and ROKU® T glue bond rock wool, glass wool, calcium silicate boards and gypsum plasterboard. They can be used on substrates such as steel, aluminium and galvanised steel.
Fire-rated adhesives in door and window structures
In the door and window industry, heat-resistant adhesives are mainly used in the manufacture of fire-rated glazings and fire-resistant seals as well as for bonding coating layers.
- Sealing of joints and gaps: Fire-rated adhesives seal joints and gaps between door/window frames and the surrounding wall. This prevents fire and smoke from penetrating through small openings.
- Fastening in place of fire-rated glass: Fire-rated adhesives are used to securely install fire-rated glass in doors or windows. They prevent the glass from falling out, even at high temperatures.
- Installation of intumescent strips: Intumescent strips are attached to doors and windows by means of fire-rated adhesives. The strips swell when exposed to heat so as to effectively seal any gaps.
- Prolonged fire resistance: Using heat-resistant adhesives can increase the fire resistance period of doors and windows. The adhesives help to maintain the structural integrity of the fire barrier for longer, thus keeping escape routes open and slowing the spread of fire to adjacent areas.
- Fastening of seals: Fire-rated adhesives are used to install special intumescent seals on doors and windows. These seals prevent the penetration of smoke and hot gas.
Fire-rated adhesives significantly improve the fire safety of doors and windows by sealing potentially weak points and reinforcing the overall structure before things get too hot to handle.
Why choose non-combustible adhesives by KuhnOdice?
Our fire-rated adhesives have been simulation-tested in realistic fire conditions and certified accordingly by independent third-party institutions.
Silicate-based adhesives with strong endothermic properties enable efficient bonding of porous materials (e.g. gypsum, rock fibre, FIBRODICE) whilst improving their fire resistance.
The non-combustible adhesives PYROCOL and ROKU® Kleber T are designed to glue rock wool, glass wool, calcium silicate boards and plasterboard. They can be used on substrates such as steel, aluminium and galvanised steel. These fast-bonding adhesives form an intumescent layer that increases the fire resistance of the elements to which they are applied. Its setting time, which is well below the setting time of conventional adhesives, makes the bonded elements fit for use in practically no time.
