Cavity barrier for ventilated facade systems
Firebreather® Cavity Barrier
The Firebreather® Cavity Barrier is an efficient fire protection solution for ventilated façades. It consists of a stainless steel mesh with two rolls, one of them containing the intumescent building material KERAFIX® Flexpan 200 NG-A in shape of a strip. When installing the barrier, the strip must be vertically aligned to the wall so that it ensures the necessary venting behind the façade cladding. In case of fire, the intumescent material will expand and seal the opening between the solid wall (including any insulation) and the façade cladding, thus preventing flames and smoke from spreading to higher floors. Firebreather® Cavity Barrier is a fully passive vent design without any need for maintenance and has fire ratings of EI 30, EI 60 and EI 90. Due to its robust design and easy installation, it is particularly suitable for multi-storey buildings as well as façades and roofs and meets demands of sustainable construction.
Fields of application
- Behind ventilated façade cladding or other cavities with fire safety requirements
Properties
- Provides ample ventilation of cavities while instantly preventing flame spread in the event of fire
- Ensures sufficient airflow behind cladding until the intumescent insert has fully expanded
- Fully passive ventilation element without moving parts or electrical wiring
- Blocks flames in open cavities (similar products allow flame penetration during the first five minutes)
- Remains intact in the event of fire and is not affected by structural movement or thermal expansion
- Contains no PVC or plastic components that could cause burning droplets
- Prevents the passage of smouldering embers
- Protects against birds, rodents, and insects larger than 2 mm
