Intumescence – explained in a nutshell

The PYRO-SAFE® B SX 3201 seal contains expanded graphite, which activates at temperatures around 150 °C to form a solid, highly insulating carbon foam. The seal can thus expand to many times its original size, transforming into a foamed char barrier in flaps, lids and doors of safety cabinets, transport boxes or battery housings. By reliably filling gaps and openings, it not only prevents the escape of flames and particulates, but also reduces the emission of hot gases and smoke.

What is thermal runaway?

Thermal runaway is a self-reinforcing, uncontrollable temperature rise in a battery cell, triggered by an internal chemical reaction (usually a short circuit), which can lead to the breakdown of the cell’s internal components. Temperatures exceeding 1,500 °C can arise within seconds. At the same time, large quantities of flammable gases, flames, smoke, and particulates are released, potentially leading to spontaneous ignition or explosion. 

The sudden, localised release of this uncontrolled energy makes battery fires particularly critical. Therefore, safety barriers must withstand this extreme dynamic instantenously – the very moment it strikes.
